As the nation unites to protest institutional racism, many have wondered: what can I do?
This year has been anything but ordinary and now it has become the most needed and most important year of all. For too long the world has been led by hate, racism and inequality. We are overdue for change. This movement has given us an opportunity to unite instead of divide. A year we can finally band together and grow.
So, how are you using your voice? Many people fear speaking out because they are worried about saying the wrong thing. That may white privilege guilt, and it can keep you from fighting for what’s important. Wouldn’t you rather say something in support of human rights than nothing at all? If you are still on the fence about supporting the Black Lives Matter movement let’s put it into perspective. Ask yourself why you don’t support it? Why are we questioning human rights? Shouldn’t every human receive the same rights? Why are so many people still uncomfortable with people of different races getting equal rights?
It is important to be an ally and understand that the way of doing things in the past was wrong. The way people were and are treated is wrong. Everyone deserves to live in a world free of discrimination and fear. No one is superior to another.
Let’s unite and use our voices together to spark change. It is a thrilling time to be a part of a world that recognizes our mistakes and wants to correct them. So how can one be an ally? Follow these steps!
Acknowledge Your Privilege:
Sign The Petitions Needed for Change: This website shares so much important information and lists all the petitions you should sign! I understand some may not be able to financially support this cause but signing petitions is FREE!
Register to Vote: This upcoming election will be the most important election in history. Be a part of the change that this world and everyone living in it deserves!
Donate To Organizations in Support of Black Lives Matter:
Defund the Police: There has been some misinformation regarding this statement. It does not mean erase police from our world completely, but rather reconstruct the department, reduce the police budget and invest that money more efficiently in your communities.
